Terol’s Torrential Win

September 16, 2008 by Jacob Black

Nico Terol has broken through for his first victory ahead of youngest ever podium winner Pol Espargaro in a rain shortened 125 grand prix at Indianapolis. The Jack & Jones WRB rider was declared the winner despite crossing the line behind rival Pol Espargaro on the lap before the red flag under a complex FIA rule.

The rule states that the last full lap for all riders is the lap the winner is declared for, meaning that the lap prior to the last time across the line was the final lap. On that lap Nico Terol crossed the line first and Pol Espargaro was second. It was an emotional maiden win for the Spaniard who originally thought that compatriot Espargaro had been the winner after the two weaved across the line chasing each other’s draft.

Grizzly Gas Kiefer Racing’s Stefan Bradl layed it all on the line to fight his way to the third spot on the podium ahead of Britain Scott Redding, Marc Marquez, Simone Corsi, Bradley Smith, Stevie Bonsey and series leader Mike di Melgio. Bradley Smith did well to fight back to eighth after being caught up in an incident on lap one with Dan Ranseder and slipping back to 25th place.

Championship contenders Simone Corsi, Mike Di Meglio and Galbor Talmasci all had difficult races finishing 7th, 10th and 14th respectively. Simone Corsi was as usual the agressor in the main battle group for the minor positions. The Jack and Jones WRB rider making contact with several riders including main rival Di Meglio during the race. Corsi was able to close the gap to Mike Di Meglio to just 25 points with four rounds remaining. Galbor Talmasci is fading further behind the two leaders on 192 and 167 points with 149 points.
